MINISTER SETS DEADLINE FOR PROJECT COMPLETION

Federal Minister for Communications Dr. Arbab Almagir Khan has asked the contractors working on Tarnol-Chablat project to complete the work in next six months or face blacklisting. He issued these directions today during a surprise visit to the site on G.T. Road where he met the project staff and witnessed progress on various sections of the project. The Chairman National Highway Authority Altaf Ahmed Ch and other senior officials also accompanied him. The minister expressed his displeasure on the slow pace of work which he said was causing immense inconvenience for the travelers. He said that being the main road artery the Grand Trunk Road carried the maximum number of vehicles and hence its repair should be taken on war footing basis. He was informed that the project was earlier scheduled to complete in February, but owing to the inefficiency on the part of the contractor more than 40% work still remained incomplete. Taking stern notice, the Minister told the contractors that their firm would face a possible blacklisting if it failed to complete the remaining works by November later this year. He also met people from the area and listened to their problems. Speaking on the occasion, the Minister said that the present government believed in empowering the common people so that they could solve their problems at their own level. He said that in order to bring stability to the country, the democracy required to survive as only a pure democratic system could provide relief to the citizens. He said that the government inherited a stockpile of problems from the previous regime but with the support of the masses, the process of recovery had already begun. He said that the government had devised a comprehensive plan to introduce a countrywide network of world class highways which was being implemented aggressively. He said that soon the whole country would be connected through motorways and expressways. Rehabilitation and improvement work on Tarnol-Chablat section got underway in 2005.
